Overall each participant is judged on seven categories, tone, intonation, technique, accuracy, interpretation, scales, and sight reading. Instrumental soloists also must play scales, the number of which are determined by difficulty level of the solo. Each NYSSMA solo is preassigned a difficulty level from I (easiest) to VI (most difficult). Participants in all categories (piano, voice, strings, woodwinds, percussion) prepare and perform a solo selected from the New York State School Music Association exam manual, perform scales, and demonstrate sight reading from original music provided by New York State School Music Association at the audition. Each student was in rehearsals for about 8 hours per day on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday leading up to their concerts at the Eastman Theater. Each spring, thousands of students register through their school music programs to attend NY State School Music association Evaluation Festivals where they are adjudicated. The music department had six students representing Shenendehowa at the NYSSMA All-State Festival the first weekend in December. Nominate any of your students who you think would appreciate this experience This is an opportunity to include your advanced students as well as your dedicated students who may not have normally participated in All County.

The New York State School Music Association is a professional organization that evaluates students in New York state from elementary school to high school. NYSSMA participation is not a prerequisite.
